What To Wear in an Indian Wedding - For Newcomers

Are you attending an Indian Wedding for the first time? If yes, then you must be looking for information to help you. This guide will help you by providing all the necessary details with do's and don't at Indian weddings.


As a newcomer, you will be amazed to see the pomp and extravagance at an Indian wedding. In case, you have previously attended an Indian wedding, you surely loved it.

What to wear

India is a country divided into 28 states. There are 9 religions and more than 1600 spoken languages. Hence, you can choose from a variety of attires. However, it doesn't mean you have to wear the attire according to their state or religion.

Women can always wear an elegant saree at the wedding and men can wear kurtas. It will be perfect for any Indian wedding.

Ladies

  • Never wear a white or black saree at an Indian wedding. You can always experiment with other colors.

You can stick with a Western-style dress. However, you should never wear a revealing dress at an Indian wedding. Avoid backless, shoulder-less, low-cut tops, no short skirts, and such type of dress.

Anarkali and designer gowns are safe options for women. You can buy Anarkali and designer gowns to get the ethnic look without any need for matching blouses. Anarkalis are long tops with a flow-like feel. Wear Anarkali with matching leggings and a kerchief (called odhani in India).

Anarkalis are easy to wear and carry with grace. It comes in numerous styles and colors. You should purchase earrings of match the color. You don't have to wear any necklace if you are neither married nor a bride.

Buy heels/sandals. You need to apply makeup the way you do it. You can leave your hair open or try out various hairstyles. Now, you are ready to rock any Indian wedding.

Men


You can buy a dapper kurta pajama. Take help from any Indian friend for shopping.

Quick notes:

  • Never wear pure white or black kurta pajamas. Try any other color.
  • You can wear a western suit or shirt with jeans.
